On May 20, 1620, Rembrandt enrolled at Leiden University. This is attested to by the earliest document that directly relates to him, the matriculation register of Leiden University for the years 1618-1631. In that register his entry is entered by the rector magnificus as follows: ‘Rembrandus Hermanni Leydensis studios[us] litterarum annor[um] 14 apud parentes’ [Rembrandt Harmensz. van Leiden, arts student, 14 years old, living with his parents].
