After the first matriculation, students had to register for each subsequent year they wanted to continue their studies, which was recorded in so-called recension lists. For the period 1608-1649 only the recension list of 1622 survived. In it, Rembrandt's name appears again: ‘Rembrandus’, with underneath: ‘* 14 15 Hermanni with his parents’. The asterisk in front suggests Rembrandt indeed registered again, and his age was corrected from 14 to 15.
Rembrandt's matriculation has led to much discussion about the seriousness with which he started his studies. Was his enrollment due to attending the Latin school, did he enroll because of the various tax exemptions for students or did he intend to study seriously? It is generally assumed that Rembrandt studied no more than one year, but his registration in 1622 shows that he was enrolled at Leiden University for at least two years, possibly even longer. It cannot be ascertained whether Rembrandt actually attended lectures, but his registration of 1622 gives reason not to downplay his time at Leiden University.
