In 1874, Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje started studying theology at Leiden University, known as a centre for the scholarly study of the Bible. Snouck's most important tutor was initially Abraham Kuenen, professor of the Old Testament, who was famous for his historical reconstruction of the origin of the books of the Bible. Snouck also studied Semitic literature. It was in this direction that he completed his studies in 1879 with his second tutor, Arabist Michael Jan de Goeje.
