Insurgents in Banten

< >

Description

In Java, Snouck researched, among other things, the causes of the 1888 rebellion that took place in Banten. In his report on the matter, he criticised the actions of partly incompetent Dutch civil servants in the region, the way in which the army acted in 1888 and the punitive measures that were subsequently taken. His main message was about how Dutch civil servants dealt with local regents and other chiefs without respect for their religious beliefs. This led to indigenous officials who outwardly did nothing about Islam and who were therefore not respected by the population.
