Washing the feet at the mosque

Description

Snouck was a fount of information on various matters relating to Islam for the colonial governorate and for Dutch civil servants on Java and beyond. He commented on judgements by priestly councils and answered various questions about, among other things, inheritance law, divorces, the nature of Islamic taxes, zakat and pitrah, and the construction of mosques. He believed that the colonial government should ensure full religious freedom, respect Islamic personal inheritance law and not interfere with the hajj. Action should only be taken when Islam was used in politics, such as with issues like the caliphate, pan-Islamism and holy war.
