< >

Description

Snouck (on the left of the photo in the white kit) went on a campaign in Aceh with Van Heutsz. They achieved some military successes and managed to bind several hulubalangs [warlords] to the Dutch administration. In February 1899, Teuku Umar died during a clash with the colonial army on the beach near Meulaboh. Snouck enjoyed life in Aceh and his participation in the military expeditions. According to him, they ‘continuously exert a beneficial influence’ on his general condition. Snouck was widely praised for his work and was at the height of his fame.
