More and more Aceh resistance leaders retreated to the interior, particularly in the Gajoland. Snouck then collected information about the language and culture of the Gajos. In 1903, he published Het Gajo-land en zijne bewoners, a detailed and astute analysis of Gajo society. With the results of Snouck's research in hand, the colonial army led by General Frits van Daalen subjugated the area. Nearly 3,000 inhabitants were killed, including more than 1,100 women and children. Snouck never commented on Van Daalen's actions in the Gajo and Alas regions, even though it was his information that had made the campaign of the colonial troops possible. Would the incursion have turned out differently if Snouck had accompanied Van Daalen, as was originally intended? In the House of Representatives, the socialist Van Kol compared Van Daalen's actions with 'the bloodthirsty cruelty of Alva' during the Eighty Years’ War.
