En route to Van Heutsz
Description
Sultan Muhammad Da’ud surrendered to the Dutch authorities at the beginning of 1903. Governor Van Heutsz gave full honours to the sultan and promised him a monthly allowance of 1,000 guilders. Snouck was furious with Van Heutsz's actions; he felt that the Dutch should not have gotten involved with the unimportant sultan. When Van Heutsz was appointed Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies in 1904, Snouck grew increasingly dissatisfied with his work. In March 1906, he left for the Netherlands.
