In 1930, Snouck's son Joesoef and the regent's daughter, Madeleine Wiranatakoesoema, got married in Bandung. For Snouck, it was one of the few good messages that reached him from the Dutch East Indies after the First World War. Snouck’s life’s work in the Indies was becoming an increasingly outdated ideal without anything positive in its place. Snouck realised this all too well. For example, the subjugation of Aceh was not followed by a genuine pacification of the area by a competent colonial administration, and the Dutch remained hated there. Indonesian political leaders were beginning to push for their country's independence. In response, Snouck pleaded for an end to the colonial rule of the Dutch East Indies as soon as possible, but he was heeded by few in the Netherlands.
