Staff Office for Indigenous Affairs

Description

Snouck's work was continued in the Dutch East Indies by the Office for Indigenous Affairs. His assistants and students Godard Hazeu, Douwe Rinkes, Emile Gobée and G.F. Pijper managed the office and tried in vain to get the colonial governorate to understand the rise of the nationalist movement in the Indies. Snouck became a major critic of Dutch colonial policy. Snouck feared that it would ultimately result in armed conflict in the Indies between the Dutch rulers and the Indonesian people. A different future became almost unthinkable after 1918.
