We start with a recent Ukrainian historical school atlas. The map presents 'Rus' in the times of Volodymyr the Great and Yaroslav the Wise' and the plan displays 'Ancient Kyiv'. The medieval federation of Kyivan Rus', included vast territories from the Carpathians to the Volga and from the Gulf of Finland to the Black Sea. Here Viking merchant-warrior princes ruled over the eastern Slavs and extracted tribute from several non-Slavic tribes. Prince Volodymyr, baptised 988 in Crimea, brought Byzantine Christianity to the expanding Rus' lands. His son Yaroslav issued the first Rus' law code and build St. Sophia Cathedral on a hill near the Dnieper River. Kyivan political and spiritual heritage later became crucial for the historical identity of both Ukraine and Russia. The white border indicates present day Ukraine.
