Volodymir Kubijovyč was a geographer and politician supporting the Ukrainian national movement in inter-war Poland. After the collapse of Austria-Hungary he served in the Ukrainian Galician Army which unsuccessfully fought the Poles for the control of eastern Galicia. During World War II he first headed the 'Ukrainian Central Committee' in the General Government. When Germans began to kill Ukrainian peasants in the Zamość region, Kubijovyč's protest to governor Frank halted that slaughter. In 1943 he collaborated with Nazi-Germany to create the Galician Waffen-SS. The Ukrainian Catholic Church had chaplains in this division. More than once though, Kubijovyč protested to German authorities against the harsh treatment of local Ukrainian populations. Some of this material was brought up as evidence at the Nuremberg Trials. Kubijovyč later became editor of the Encyclopedia of Ukraine. Here three demographic maps from 1937: the distribution of nationalities and of religions (inset map) and the percentage of Ukrainians of the whole population.
