Reading a Naxi Manuscript

The following story occurs in Or. 26.029, Geeq Kul Sal (Inviting the god Geeq Kul).

This manuscript tells of the origin of the god “Geeq Kul” (a protective deity who slays evil spirits), and how he was called upon to fight the demons in the great battle between the white and black tribes.

How Geeq Kul was born and how he conquered the demons (story excerpt) (Fig. 3.1):

In the beginning the breath and voice of the god Saqyi weddei and the goddess Miqzol huamu came together and changed into a black egg.

(Figs. 3.2 and 3.3) The black egg gestated in the heavens for three days, but did not hatch. It gestated on the earth for three days, but still did not hatch. Then in the clouds, and the grass, and in the winter snow, the summer rain, the spring wind, and the autumn flowers, for three days each, but in the end it did not hatch.

(Video 1) The egg, gestating amidst the snow. See the Naxi graph for snow: bbei snow(Representing three flakes falling from the sky). And so, the gods came together and decided to send the black egg to the peaks of the black mountains.

(Video 2) The egg is sent to the peaks of the black mountain. A figure is seen, holding the egg. The egg finally nestles among the black peaks. See Naxi graph for clifftop: aiq hilltop. The chicken head is a phonetic, indicating pronunciation (not that the chicken lives in the mountains). In the manuscript, to indicate that the cliffs are black, the Dongba simply colours the tips in black.

After nine months and thirteen days, the black egg hatched and out came Geeq Kul with nine heads and eighteen arms (Fig. 3.4).

In ancient times, the black tribe of the ghostly realm and the white tribe of the divine realm fought against one another (Fig. 3.5). Both sides dispatched vast multitudes of soldiers, launching a desperate battle for control of the land and its resources.

(Video 3) The demons of the black realm march to war. Watch as the various demons (differentiate by their headdresses) march off to battle in unison.

Amidst this fierce battle, the three generals of the white tribe, realized that they were no match for the black tribe, so they made the decision to send for the all-powerful Geeq Kul with nine heads and eighteen arms to join the battle. The three gods tasked the white bat to ride the silver eagle and entreat Geeq Kul to join the white tribe (Fig. 3.6).

All the gods prayed and burned incense, and Geeq Kul joined the battle, beheading each of the nine generals of the ghostly realm, and killing all the 360 evil spirits. The white tribe was victorious against the black tribe. After this victory, Geeq Kul returned to the forests of the high mountains where he lived (Fig. 3.7).
