Around 1930 caravanning came into vogue in Java. ‘Car nomads’ hitched their caravan to their car or filled their trailer with tents, kitchenware, collapsible chairs and tables. The attraction of camping, an activity popular with Indies Scouts as well, lay in the great freedom it afforded to decide on one’s overnight stay oneself and make one’s own plans for the day. After some days in the open air, caravanners faced their new work or school day wholly invigorated.
