Zaydi imams and their power
Description
This manuscript contains two historical texts. One is a chronicle composed during the first period of Ottoman rule in Yemen (1538-1635) by a grandson of a Zaydi imam. This first text attested to Ottoman influence since chronicles were uncommon in Yemen. Bound together with this text in one volume is a biography of the imam who ousted the Ottomans from Yemen, al-Muʾayyad Muḥammad (d. 1644). It is more than symbolic that this collected volume holds these two texts together, as there was a lot of continuity between the “Ottoman century” in Yemen and the restored Zaydi imamate.
