Atlas minor

Description

The Flemish engraver-publisher Jodocus Hondius settled in Amsterdam where he published an extended edition of the atlas by Gerard Mercator. Next to these folio atlases, he also compiled pocket atlases, derived from Mercator’s atlas. Vietnam is shown on two maps in this Atlas minor, one of the Southeast-Asian islands (Insulae Indiae orientalis) and one of India and mainland southeast-Asia (India orientalis). Only a few places along the Vietnamese coast are indicated on the map. The name Cochinchina appears twice on the map: for a region (located too far to the north) and for a city.
