Pieter van der Aa probably is the most productive map publisher from Leiden. In or around 1713 he published two atlases: Le nouveau théatre du monde and the Nouvel atlas. The copperplate printed maps were used for both editions. The Nouvel atlas has an oblong format with a single map printed on a sheet. Le nouveau théatre du monde is a folio size atlas with two maps printed on one sheet, surrounded by a separately printed frame. It is the first time a separate map of mainland Southeast Asia was printed in the Netherlands. Looking at the coloured map in the Nouvel atlas we clearly see that Vietnam is divided in three ‘kingdoms’: Tonquin, Cochinchine and Ciampa. The Mekong delta is indicated as part of Cambodia. The only Dutch toponyms in Vietnam are Norderwick and Vuyle (island).
