Description

A lesser known Amsterdam map publisher is Steven Cornelis van Esveldt. He cooperated with other publishers like Arent van Huissteen and Willem Holtrop. Holtrop even married Van Esveldt’s daughter Helena. Several pocket atlases from the end of the eighteenth century contain maps by these three publishers. This map of Pegu (Myanmar), Siam (Thailand) and Cochinchina (Vietnam) covers a smaller region than the maps by Van der Aa and Tirion. The Malacca peninsula and parts of India and the Indonesian archipelago are not included anymore. However, the size of the map is also much smaller. It contains some Dutch toponyms: Nagtegaal, Tyger E[iland], Schuits B[aai], Toppers Hoetje and Krabben E[iland].
