Not much is known about traveler Daniel Tavernier. He is the brother of the more famous French merchant, traveler and explorer Jean-Baptiste Tavernier. He made six voyages through Asia. On his second voyage Daniel accompanied him. Jean-Baptiste’s popular travel accounts were published in French, German, Dutch, Italian and English. The writing on Tonkin was based on Daniel’s observations and were accompanied by this map that show the northern coasts of Vietnam with river delta’s. In the sea an image of Neptune is added. The map is in French but the location in the volume where the map has to be included, added in the upper right corner, is in Dutch.
