Description

Guillaume Thomas Raynal (1713-1796) was a French Jesuit and man of letters during the Age of Enlightenment. His most famous publication is L'Histoire philosophique et politique des établissements et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes, a multi-volume work published in Amsterdam from 1770 onwards. In 1772 the accompanying Atlas de l’Histoire des deux Indes was published. Later these works were translated into Dutch. In the Atlas tot opheldering der Wysgeerige en Staatkundige Geschiedenis van de Bezittingen en den Koophandel der Europeanen in de beide Indiën (Amsterdam: M. Schalekamp), we find this clear map of the region around the South China Sea. Note the indication of seasonal currents in the South China Sea.
