The Macartney Embassy
Description
This detailed chart shows the Vietnamese coast near the Đà Nẵng Bay (named Baai van Turon on the map), Sơn Trà peninsula (Tien-Tcha), Hội An (Fai-Foi) and the Chàm Islands (Kallao or Cù Lao Chàm). This map was included in the Dutch translation of George Staunton’s An authentic account of an embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China (1797). The original map was designed by John Barrow and Henry William Parish. Indicated on the chart is the course of the Jackall, one of the ships of the so-called Macartney Embassy, a British diplomatic and trading mission to the Qianlong Emperor. Soundings along this course are given as well as a ship maker’s village. Below the map a coastal profile of the area is added.
