Jacob Kuyper was Dutch geographer and mapmaker. The first atlas he published was the Atlas der wereld in 1857. At least sixteen editions of this atlas saw the light. From 1864 onwards these editions were named Nieuwe atlas der wereld (New atlas of the world). The 1864 edition was also the first in which a separate map of continental South-Asia was included, titled ‘Oost-Indië (Britsch-Indië)’. This map covers the region between the Gulf of Oman to the South China Sea. Vietnam is indicated as the independent state of Annam. Only the city of Saigon and its direct surroundings were a French colony at that time. In the edition of 1890 the French colony had grown in size and covered large parts of Cambodia as well. The region of Hanoi and the Red River delta is indicated as under French control.
