School atlases were often compiled by geography teachers. Johannes Daniël Bakker and Folkert Deelstra were both teachers in Groningen. In 1885 they published the first edition of their school atlas, a relatively comprehensive atlas with eleven maps related to Asia (of which seven to the Dutch East Indies). Vietnam is indicated in yellow and named ‘Anam’, with the purple French colony around Saigon in the south. Furthermore the region of Tonkin is indicated and the cities of Hanoi (Kesjo) and Hué are indicated. Geographical information on maps in school atlases is often less dense than in general reference atlases, as is the case with this simple map.
