Elsevier is a well-known Dutch scientific publishing house. In 1950-1951 they published the Grote Elsevier Atlas, in the middle of the Anti-French Resistance war (1946-1954). The atlas consists of two ring binders, the second binding was published in 1951 and covers America, Asia, Oceania, the Polar regions and global cities. The map Achter-Indië (‘Further India’) covers Birma, Siam, Malacca and Indochina. The opposite page gives information on the history, political situation and population. On Indochina it is stated: ‘Until 1946 this region consisted of 1 colony: Cochinchina and 4 protectorates: Annam, Cambodia, Tonkin and Laos. Now (1951), Indochina consists of three associated sovereign states as parts of the French Union, namely the Empire of Viet-Nam (emperor Bao Dai), and the kingdoms Cambodia and Laos. In Vietnam the “government” of Ho Chi Minh – recognized by the Soviet-Union – fights against the imperial army, reinforced with French troops.’
