Jewish houses
Description
Even to a tourist like Flieringa, it was clear that the Jewish quarter in Sanaa had its own atmosphere and distinguishing traits. In this photo, Flieringa is drawing our attention to the contrast between the buildings in the Muslim parts of Sanaa and those in the Jewish quarter. They were lower, with fewer floors, and decorated in a less striking manner. This was one of the ways in which the per-ceived lower social status of Jews was enforced.
