Israel Suberi

Description

Israel Subeiri played a unique role in Imam Yaḥyā Ḥamīd al-Dīn’s days. Unlike other Jews, who, as we saw, faced different forms of repression, he was trust-ed with sensitive matters. He was responsible for the arms trade and dealt in archaeological artifacts from Yemen on behalf of the Imam. In 1937-1938 he was sent by the Imam to Nazi Germany to contract arms for the government. In this photo he is pictured in his house. Curiously, he is not wearing the long side-locks that Jewish men were required to maintain in Sanaa in those days.
