Frederick William Burbidge travelled through Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines, but mainly on the island of Kalimantan. As the title of his book says, it is ‘a naturalist’s journal’, with a focus on the flowers and plants the author collected. Frederick Burbidge was after all a botanist. Nevertheless, his book deals with other subjects as well, and included “notes on tropical travel”. Although those parts of his book are obsolete by now, his botanical observations are still valid, which caused the books to be reprinted in the last decade of the 20th century.
