This novel by the German author Eginhard von Barfusz, translated into Dutch, is a typical example of the kind of colonial and racist literature that was read in Europe, without much knowledge of or respect for the people of Asia in general and Indonesia in particular. However unpleasant we consider these books today, they are testimony to the false and oppressive views that were held in Europe in the nineteenth century.
